I just wonder how big is big enough and at what point does lack of
competition begin to allow multinational corporations begin to ignore
quality because of lack of consumer choice.
Mars Pet Food is just such an example with four billion dollar brands
already in their house(Pedigree, Whiskas, Royal Canin, and Banfield
Veterinary Clinics. They have ownership of Cesar, Nutro, Sheba,
Dreamies, KiteKat, Chappi, Catson, Frolic, Perfect Fit, and Greenies
and with their recent acquisition of Proctor & Gamble's pet food
division, they have added Iams, Eukanuba, and Natura Pet Foods.
With the recent law suit filed by Purina against Blue Buffalo, it is
rumored that Mars is making a move on the defendant and will then add
the six dog food lines and four cat food lines to their massive list
of products.`
I have to question whether this drive to become a larger and larger
part of our precious pet's nutrition, will this be an opportunity to
have an even more direct line to cheap ingredients from China and
other parts of Asia, grain ingredients raised on fertilizers that
originally was human fecal waste and animals so heavily medicated due
to unsanitary conditions.
